Text-message publishing

Once you’ve linked your phone in Text publishing settings, you can publish by texting the number shown there. Everything you publish this way is public, on your profile, just like a post from the website. Only texts from your verified phone publish; texts from any other number do nothing.

One message, one post

Text anything (words, a link, photos, a voice note, or a video) and it becomes a post. You don’t need a command. We text you the link when it’s published.

  1. Bark on the old oak by the library
  2. [photo]

Two texts sent a minute apart are two posts. Send them together in one message, or use /begin, to make one post.

Several messages, one post

Send /begin, then everything you want in the post, then /done. Nothing publishes until you send /done. If you don’t send anything for 24 hours, we save it as a draft instead of publishing it.

  1. /begin
  2. Walk notes, Tuesday
  3. [three photos]
  4. [voice note]
  5. /done

One post with the text, the photos, and the recording, in that order.

  1. /begin 4
  2. [photo]
  3. [photo]
  4. [photo]
  5. /done

With a number after /begin, we tell you if an attachment didn’t arrive. Send /resume and the missing one, or /done again to publish what arrived.

Commands

Commands are exact: send them on their own, with nothing else in the message. Capital letters don’t matter.

SendWhat it does
/beginStart a multi-message post. Everything you send until /done becomes one post.
/begin NStart a multi-message post and say how many attachments you'll send (1 to 20), so we can tell you if one doesn't arrive.
/doneFinish and publish the multi-message post. Sending it again later just repeats the link.
/statusWhat we’ve received so far, anything still processing, and the link once it’s published.
/cancelStop the current post without publishing. It’s kept as a draft on the website.
/resumeReopen your last unfinished post, adding anything we kept for you.
/newPost what we kept for you, or your next message, on its own.
/helpA short list of these commands.
“I’m going to send multiple files”Same as /begin
“done”Same as /done, only while a multi-message post is open

Start a message with a backslash (\) to post it exactly as written, even if it looks like a command. The backslash is removed.

A message that starts with / but isn’t a command gets a short help reply and publishes nothing. A command sent with attachments is kept aside: send the command again on its own, or /resume to add the attachments to your post.

After /done

For 2 minutes after a multi-message post publishes, anything else you send is kept aside rather than started as a new post, in case a text was delayed. Send /new to post it on its own, or /resume to reopen. Anything kept aside that you don’t place within 24 hours is saved as a draft, never published.

What you can send

Phone carriers often shrink photos and videos sent by text message. For full quality, upload on the website instead. If something can’t be processed, we text you a link to the draft, where you can fix it, or send /done to publish without it.

Descriptions for photos and videos are optional. You can add them later by editing the post on the website.

Replies, STOP, and HELP

We reply to confirm posts, answer commands, and tell you when something needs attention: at most 30 replies an hour. Message and data rates may apply.

Privacy

Your number is never shown on your profile or to other members. We keep the text of your messages for 30 days after they’re processed and delete their records after 90 days. Details are in the text program terms and the privacy policy.
